PhD: Integration of Geodesign & Urban Metabolism

Function specifications

The research project will be part of the recently funded H2020 Research project REPAiR: Resource Management in Peri-urban Areas: Going Beyond Urban Metabolism.
The core objective of REPAiR is to provide local and regional authorities with an innovative geodesign decision support environment (GDSE) that will be used to create integrated, place-based eco-innovative spatial development strategies promoting the use of waste as a resource. The successful candidate will work on integrating geodesign and urban metabolism primarily in the case of the Amsterdam metropolitan area. The PhD proposal will be formulated in detail by the supervisors and the candidate in the first three months of the project. The successful applicant will also contribute to teaching activities related to REPAiR. The research project will be conducted in relation to the AMS Institute in Amsterdam (Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions; www.ams-institute.org) and will involve work in Amsterdam on a regular basis too.
Planned start date is 1 September 2016.
Length of employment: Temporary, 4 years

Function requirements

Applicants should either hold a Master degree in a design discipline such as urbanism, architecture, landscape architecture or another relevant discipline and have good skills in using GIS for spatial analyses and modelling, or alternatively should hold a Master degree in geomatics, based on a Bachelor degree in one of the aforementioned design disciplines. Basic skills in Python and SQL as well as experience with Web-GIS are an advantage. Applicants should have excellent academic qualifications, above average study results, a strong interest in doing research and knowledge of relevant research methods like material flow analyses. The research will include data analyses; therefore, basic statistical skills are required. An excellent command of spoken and written English and good communication skills are crucial. A good command of Dutch is an advantage but not essential.
Applicants should provide with their application documents a one-page draft proposal for the PhD project, where they reflect on ideas related to the REPAiR research project.
